St. Agnes “Rings in” the New Year with Jim’s Place Celebration

MEMPHIS, TENN. (December 22, 2005)…Young ladies from St. Agnes Academy have chosen Jim’s Place East to extend their celebration of a rich tradition steeped in fine education and family ties. Following the juniors’ ring ceremony at St. Louis Catholic Church, 81 young women are expected to lunch at Jim’s with their families and school faculty. The total number should climb to 261. The luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2006 at 5560 Shelby Oaks Dr.

“We’ve been coming to Jim’s Place for more than 10 years,” said Betty Pate, chair of the St. Agnes Theology Department.  “We keep coming back for the service. And the food is always excellent. They have a wonderful reputation in the Memphis area.”

“It’s a pleasure to share in the joy and accomplishments of these young ladies. We’re pleased to be a part of the St. Agnes tradition,” said Angelo Liollio, co-owner of Jim’s Place.

The menu for Friday’s luncheon will include a crisp garden salad with Jim’s house dressing, chicken kebabs skewered with fresh vegetables over a bed of rice pilaf, and Jim’s signature dessert, chocolate mousse in a phyllo pastry shell.

The St. Agnes Ring Ceremony is significant because “it marks the first step toward graduation, celebrates where they’ve come as a class, how they’ve matured and how they’ve grown into the lovely young women that they are,” according to Ms. Pate. The St. Agnes juniors are now three semesters shy of being the 155th graduating class of the all-girl institution founded in 1851.

This year, among the juniors who will receive the coveted high school ring are two sets of twins:  Mille and Katie Burke, 16, of East Memphis and Megan and Molly Kinsella, 17, of Bartlett, Tenn.

“We’re very excited about the quality of education at St. Agnes and the opportunity for them to attend.  I went to Christian Brothers so I know that St. Agnes knows how to mold young women,” said Dad Gerry Burke. “My Mom, Patsy, graduated from St. Agnes in 1945. She gave her ring to our daughter, Hart, last year and will buy new rings for the twins this year.” Gerry and his wife Margaret are native Memphians.

Regarding Jim’s Place, Gerry said, “We had our Christmas dinner there last Friday night (Dec. 16) and it was out of this world. And my wife and I ate there a month ago and it was incredible. I know I’m getting a gift certificate from Jim’s for Christmas, too. It’s my new favorite.”

Twins Megan and Molly come from a large family. They are two of seven kids. Four are currently attending St. Agnes. The other two are Maureen, 16, and Michelle, 14. One can expect Madeline, 7, and Mary Kate, 4, to follow in a few years. Only one boy, Peter, 9, holds down the fort. “We’re tremendously happy with the school. It’s a great environment for the kids,” said Dad Pete Kinsella. “I believe they’ve been challenged scholastically and athletically, too. We have always felt strongly about giving them a Catholic education.”

On Jim’s Place, Pete said, “I have been there several times - - for work and socially - - and enjoy it very much. It’s got great ambience. My wife, Angela, and I have enjoyed going there for dinner. We’re always assured of a great environment and a great food offering.” The Kinsella family is originally from St. Louis, Mo.

The St. Agnes theme this year is “Live life to the fullest.” “We pray that the girls will stay open to all the possibilities that life offers them,” said Ms. Pate.
